BIOGRAPHY

Shortly after graduating from Stanford University with a degree in political science, Cliff made the decision to pursue his passion. Songwriting. The subsequent 25 years have brought a #1 song on the jazz charts, a performance on the Grand Ole Opry and frequent collaborations with artists including Ke$ha, Keb’ Mo’, Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), Chris Barron (Spin Doctors) and Lisa Loeb. Cliff teaches songwriting for organizations including The Stanford Jazz Workshop and Lynda.com and has spoken about songwriting for TEDx.

Most recently, Cliff has begun teaching corporate executive teams how to problem solve and increase productivity through songwriting. Neuroscientist and NY Times bestselling author, Daniel Levitin, puts it best in this executive summary.

The Workshop

  • Begins with a 15 minute presentation/performance highlighting the similarities between effective songwriting technique and corporate communication/collaboration.
  • Participants are provided with a primer on the rules of songwriting and metaphor.
  • Small teams of participants are then tasked with writing a verse and chorus of a song based on a metaphor derived from the client’s goal for the session.
  • Cliff takes the written verse/chorus provided by each songwriting team and puts them to music for a final performance/presentation.
