Welcome to the Winter 2009 edition of the newsletter. There’s no point in ignoring the elephant in the room. It’s not exactly news that we’re in a difficult economic time. However, why not see this as an opportunity to get ahead? Now, more than ever, it’s important to be bold and actively pursue your musical career. The more you do on your own behalf when things are tough and others are backing off, the more progress you will have made when things inevitably turn around.

This issue’s guest columnist, Chris Keaton, is a Nashville fixture and luminary in the songplugging community. Chris offers some much-needed words of wisdom and encouragement when it comes to getting your songs out in the world.

Our featured album is Charlie Degenhart’s brand new, six-song EP. If you’re in the mood for some of Nashville’s finest rock/soul musicians putting their touch on six exceptional songs and vocal performances, then Charlie’s EP is for you.

Congratulations are in order for Toni Wellman, the winner of the newsletter’s Shure Beta 58 microphone. Enjoy, Toni, and keep ‘em laughing on the comedy club circuit!

Finally, in an attempt to appear hip, I’ve joined the ranks of the bloggers. If you’re looking for a few more articles on the music biz, I’ve been invited to do a series of blogs for Tunecore.com. And for those of you who are a little more internet savvy and would like to stay even more current, feel free to follow me on Twitter.com by signing up and entering my screen name (cliffgoldmacher).

Stay warm and don't let up,
Cliff

THE VALUE OF A GOOD MIX

Who's the Expert?

Once you’ve decided to up the ante and put your music out there for the world to hear, it’s in your best interest to pay close attention to every step in the recording process. One of the most vital of these steps is the mix of your song. It’s not enough to have a great song. You need a great recording and a strong mix is an essential part of any great recording. The art of mixing (and make no mistake, it is an art) is not a skill everyone possesses. It’s well worth your while, even if you’ve recorded your tracks yourself in your home studio, to seek out an experienced mixing engineer. While there is no substitute for a dynamic, exciting musical performance, a good mix can enhance every

CHRIS KEATON Professional Song Plugger:
Taking Your Songs from the Top Drawer to the Top

Quick...I bet you can name fifteen songwriters you know who never do anything to promote their career in a meaningful way. They are always the first to complain and the last to do anything about moving forward. They may have wonderful songs, which could really impact peoples’ lives in a positive manner (and make lots of money for the writer) but they never take the step to pitch the songs (or have them pitched). To them it seems like a long way from the top drawer to the top. And it may well be, but you have to start somewhere.

Rock/Soul at its finest

CHARLIE DEGENHART

I’m proud to announce the release of the six-song, eponymous EP from Nashville-based, Philly-bred singer/songwriter, Charlie Degenhart. This EP is the second project I’ve had the privilege of working on with Charlie and as good as he was when we met, he just keeps getting better. This excerpt from Charlie’s bio puts it best. “He’s got a new sound, a new haircut and soul man’s suit to boot. He’s moved into a new neighborhood, added some female singers, dusted off the clavinet and electric piano, assembled the horns and he means business.”

Charlie will be debuting the new songs at his album release in Nashville on Thursday, April 2nd at The Basement with yours truly pitching in on a few instruments. It’s a little ways off but well worth putting on your calendars.

Click here to get a free download, listen to samples and purchase the EP.

Contest Rules: Every hour of studio time you book in either New York or Nashville will count as an entry in the drawing for a Shure Beta 58A microphone. No limit to the number of entries.
