In the immortal words of Brian Johnson and the Young brothers, I’m officially “back in black.” With the exceptional help of Brian Casel at Casjam Media, I’ve spent the last six months updating and revising the Cliff Goldmacher Music Production website to its new look and dramatically improved functionality. Along with the all-new website, I’ve just finished writing my first eBook entitled “The Songwriter’s Guide to Recording Professional Demos.” The best part is that the book is absolutely free. Click here to download your eBook.
It’s been a great six or so months since the last newsletter and I’ve got the client and collaborator success stories to prove it. First of all, congratulations to this issue’s featured artist, my cowriter and friend Spencer Day, on his Concord Jazz release “Vagabond” and his national TV performance. Secondly, congratulations to Heather Rigdon for her song’s inclusion on the upcoming Putumayo Records “Jazz Around the World” compilation. Finally, congratulations to M.E. Reich on her second place in the Kauai Songwriter’s Festival song contest with the recording we did this past summer.
Speaking of social networking, along with the new website and eBook, I’ve finally gotten my Facebook and Twitter acts together so feel free join in and follow along. Well, that’s it for this round. Enjoy the newsletter and stay in touch.

Marketing Your Music Online
The Bad News
In my 20 years of making a living in music, one thing has become more and more clear to me. It’s work. The romantic image of the starving artist being so incredibly talented that one day he or she gets discovered and becomes rich and famous overnight is a dangerous myth. I say “dangerous” because the more you as an artist believe it, the less inclined you’ll be to do any work on your own behalf. The gritty reality is that if you don’t do the necessary (and daily) work promoting yourself and your music, it’s highly unlikely anything will ever happen.
The Good News
There has NEVER been a better time to spread the word about yourself and your music. The internet, with its downloadable digital music files, social networking sites and countless other advances that we can’t even begin to imagine yet, has leveled the playing field in a way that will make the work you have to do infinitely more effective.

Social Media for Musicians
BRIAN CASEL:
Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, YouTube, Myspace... Oh how the times they are a changin' for the working musician. Today's music scene isn't what it used to be. Or is it?
I'm here to tell you that things aren't as different as they seem. Today's social web (a.k.a. "web 2.0") can be a powerful tool to promote your music career, your business, or your brand. However, it's not something that can be automated or pushed to the side. It's about building your following one Facebook fan at a time. The more you put into it, the more you get out. That's not really a new concept when you think about it.

SPENCER DAY
It’s been my distinct pleasure to watch Spencer Day’s star rise from the time I met him three years ago up to now with his debut album “Vagabond” on Concord Jazz hitting #7 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart. Spencer Day is that rare combination of gifted artist, skilled songwriter and relentless touring musician so it’s no surprise that success is coming his way.
Born in Utah, raised in Arizona and currently living in Los Angeles, Day is the embodiment of his “Vagabond” album title. His piano playing and singing are top notch and reminiscent of the best qualities of Harry Connick, Jr. Day’s songwriting is both melodic and lyrically multi-textured while remaining both moving and accessible.
Most recently, Spencer debuted one of our collaborations on national television during Craig Ferguson’s Late, Late show.
To learn more about Spencer and his music go to his website or take a look at his video biography.
